The Faces Behind the Sun

Todd and Julie Thompson

Julie Thompson, Publisher

I grew up in the Texas Hill Country, so this beautiful part of Texas has always been home to me. I love its people, its history, its small towns, its ranches, and the stories that make each community unique.

In 2005, I purchased the company from another couple when it had just two publications. Today, I’m proud to now publish four: Hill Country SUN, Welcome to Wimberley, Hill Country River Region Visitor’s Guide, and Southwest Hill Country Hunting Guide.

What I love most about my work is getting to know the Hill Country and sharing what I discover with others. There’s always another story to tell, another person to meet, and another place to explore.

When I’m not working, I enjoy traveling and spending time outdoors with my husband, Todd. We love spending time with our family and friends, and with four children between us, all in their twenties, there’s never a shortage of adventures and memories to make.

As much as we love traveling and seeing new places, we’re always happy to come home to the Hill Country.

I feel incredibly fortunate to make a living doing something I love—and to share this special place with you. Welcome to the Hill Country. I’m glad you’re here.

John and Melissa Ball

Melissa Maxwell Ball, Editor

I’ve been part of the Hill Country SUN for more than 20 years, and I’ve loved watching our publications grow and change over that time. As editor of all four publications, I’m involved in just about every part of bringing an issue together — from planning content and working with our writers to editing, design and all the little details that somehow become a finished publication.

The creative side has always been my favorite part. I love beautiful photography, great design and finding new ways to tell the stories of the people, places and experiences that make the Hill Country interesting.

My husband, John, and I have been married for 15 years, and together we have a big blended family. When I’m not working, I love spending time with family and friends, traveling, and hanging out at home with our animals — who are very much part of the family.

One of the things I enjoy most about publishing is that no two issues are ever quite the same. There’s always a new story, a new idea to try or something I haven’t done before.

After more than two decades, I’m still proud of the publications we create and excited about what we’ll come up with next.
