Where do stressed urbanites go when a little escape is called for? Well, for those seeking beneficial solace in a natural setting, Center Point’s “campy” Charmadillo certainly fits the bill. Sprawling across 44 beautiful acres of unspoiled native terrain, this welcoming Hill Country haven offers a chance to comfortably disconnect from the congestion and constraints of hectic city life and reconnect with nature for a few glorious days of recharge and restoration.

And, while that might sound like some therapeutic claptrap, the formula is really quite simple: Let the unsculpted surroundings — an abundance of earth, flora, fauna, wind and sky — be the primary attraction, then carefully add the essentials, including lodging, power, Wi-Fi and other amenities, to ensure plenty of creature comfort. The result combines primitiveness, privacy and camaraderie in whatever measure fits, creating an atmosphere conducive to slowing down and simply enjoying the surroundings.

Yep, the Charmadillo — a play on the name of one of the beloved local species — really is a special place where guests can relax, interact with nature, enjoy some down time and find some peace and quiet. And that’s just what owner and operator Sarah Rothstein had in mind when she created it. A Minnesota native, Sarah relocated to Texas after her parents moved to Austin. During an earlier visit, she discovered just how wonderful the Hill Country was and, with her extensive background in hospitality, decided this was where she wanted to establish a sanctuary where people could experience what locals have long enjoyed — the Hill Country’s natural warmth and charm.That sanctuary became reality three years ago when Sarah found and purchased the pristine acreage and built seven rustic but comfy and cozy 180-square-foot cabins, a spacious communal den, play and work space with a full kitchen, shaded outdoor seating areas, walking trails, a sauna, soaking pools, a yoga deck, a smoker and more.

Beyond the cabins are additional lodging options, including an expansive rentable canvas bell tent, a vintage Ford Econoline two-person camper, remote RV sites with hookups and secluded campsites — tent not included — for the truly “back to nature” types. The living arrangements share ample restroom and shower facilities that are private during individual use.

While the entire package is appealing to those who want a little — or a lot — of seclusion, this hidden gem also sits in the middle of an area filled with attractions. Some come to the Charmadillo with the idea that they’re “here to stay,” while others use the property as a base camp for exploring nearby Hill Country destinations.

Garner State Park, Lost Maples State Natural Area, Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Hill Country State Natural Area are all within reach, as are the shops and restaurants found in Center Point, Comfort, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, Bandera and elsewhere.

Lastly, the Charmadillo welcomes everyone, with guests usually arriving as individuals or couples and ranging in age. But it’s also ideal for larger gatherings, including family reunions, weddings, retreats and other group activities seeking a unique and welcoming venue. Pets can come too.
